Tallahassee, Florida — The Florida GOP says they're planning to dump a portrait of the formerly Republican Governor Charlie Crist on eBay. But the one that went up for sale on April 30 isn't theirs. Most people think Billy Pappas is crazy.  And why wouldn’t they?  Who other than a crazy person would spend more than 8 years of his life drawing a single portrait? And of a celebrity, no less?  But that’s what Pappas did. Every day, seven Billy Pappashours a day, Pappas stood in front of an easel, arms steadied by slings and drew, with a razor sharp pencil, what he believes to be the most detailed, precise and life-like drawing ever created. His 14” × 17” work is based on Richard Avedon’s 1957 photograph of Marilyn Monroe. It’s not an iconic photo, but it might show Marilyn Monroe...

Washington (AP) - His name appears on radical Internet postings. A fellow officer says he fought his deployment to Iraq and argued with soldiers who supported U.S. wars. He required counseling as a medical student because of problems with patients. There are many unknowns about Nidal Malik Hasan, the man authorities say is responsible for the worst mass killing on a U.S. military base. Most of all, his motive. But details of his life and mindset, emerging from official sources and personal acquaintances, are troubling

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- President George Bush was presented a gold medal Saturday at the unveiling of his portrait at the Union League of Philadelphia. "Welcome to my hanging," the president joked to the crowd upon his arrival. He was given several ovations by those on hand. Bush drew laughs for his self-deprecating comments about his looks. Bush's portrait was painted by Mark Carder. The club has a gallery displaying portraits of every Republican president since Abraham Lincoln. "(Carder) did a really fine job with a challenging subject," Bush said. "I was taken aback by how much gray paint...

Mystery Of The 'missing' Shakespeare Portrait

Mystery of 'missing' Shakespeare portrait 30 October 2007 NewScientist.com news service It is the kind of argument William Shakespeare himself would have enjoyed. On one side is a claim that a famous portrait of the Bard has gone missing and been replaced by a fake. On the other side, the claim is dismissed as nonsense. The row is over a painting of Shakespeare known as the Flower portrait. Hildegard Hammerschmidt-Hummel from the University of Mainz, Germany, examined the portrait in 1996 and pronounced it an authentic representation of Shakespeare, painted in 1609. In 2006, the National Portrait Gallery in London...

ANNAPOLIS -- Perhaps former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s best excuse should be that he was too busy running Maryland to sit long enough for a painting, but Mr. Ehrlich's four-year term has ended and his official portrait still is not hanging inside the State House. Mr. Ehrlich has declined to say why he has no portrait to go with those of the state's 12 other most recent governors, hung in the second-floor reception room, a stately space in which governors hold press conferences and other events. Former staffer Paul E. Schurick said only that Mr. Ehrlich, the state's first...
